Badminton Service Rules

Badminton Service is one of the basic but extremely important shot in badminton match. It is why understanding badminton service rules are also very important for every player. Below is some of service rules for beginner.

Badminton Service Rules – General.

– The server and receiver stand in opposite courts without touching the service lines.

– The server and receiver must be ready before the service.

– At the begging of the service, some parts of both feet of the server and receiver are on the surface of the court in stationary position.

– The whole shuttlecock should be below server’s waist (the lowest part of the server bottom rib) at the time the shuttlecock being hit by the server racket.

– The shuttlecock shall flight upwards from the server racket over the net to the receiver service court on or within the boundary lines.

Singles

  • The server will serve and the receiver will receive in their right service court at the beginning of a match or when the server has scored an even point in that match.
  • The server will serve and the receiver will receive in their left service court when the server has scored an odd point in that match.
  • In a rally, the shuttlecock will be hit in turn by the server and receiver until the shuttlecock stops.
  • If the server wins a rally, the server will score a point and serve again from the alternative service court.
  • If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver will score a point and becomes a new server.

Doubles

  • A serving side player will serve from the right service court at the beginning of a match or when that player has scored an even point in that match.
  • A serving side player will serve from the left service court at the beginning of a match or when that player has scored an odd point in that match.
  • Players will not change their service court until they win a point when they are serving.
  • When service, after the shuttlecock is returned in a rally, it may be hit by either player of both serving side and receiving side until the shuttlecock stops.
  • The serving side will score a point when they win a rally and then serve again from the alternative service court by the same player.
  • If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side will score a point and becomes a new serving side. If that win point is even, the player from the right service court will service and vice versa.
  • No player can serve or receive 2 consecutive services in the same match.
